Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO to Address Tri-C Graduates

Forty-second annual commencement to feature Dr. Eugene Sanders
CLEVELAND, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Cuyahoga Community College, Ohio's
largest and oldest community college, will conduct its 42nd annual
commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m., at Cleveland State
University's Wolstein Center. This year 2,187 students have petitioned to
graduate. The fall, spring and summer grads will receive two-year associate
degrees in arts, applied business, applied science, science and technical
studies.
Eugene T. W. Sanders, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland
Metropolitan School District (CMSD), will deliver the commencement address.
Sanders, CEO of the largest school district in Northeast Ohio, made history
by moving the Cleveland Metropolitan School District from academic watch to
continuous improvement in his first year. His innovative plan included
zero-tolerance discipline, school dress codes and single-gender academies.
Prior to his work at CMSD, Sanders was named Ohio Superintendent of the
Year by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation for his leadership in raising
graduation rates and making Toledo Public Schools one of the few urban
districts in the U.S. to meet federal guidelines for Adequate Yearly
Progress.
Dawn C. Cook is this year's student speaker. She is graduating Summa
Cum Laude with an Associate of Applied Science degree, majoring in interior
design. The mother of two holds a bachelor's and master's degree, but
returned to Tri-C to study interior design with plans to open her own
interior design business.

Scott Gunkelman is graduating from both Strongsville High School and
Tri-C. He is graduating Magna Cum Laude with an Associate of Arts
degree and his father, Pastor Doug Gunkelman of Divinity Lutheran
Church will be giving the benediction at the Commencement ceremony.
-- Sabreen Taha, of Independence, has taught English as a Second Language
in Iman, Jordan. She is graduating Magna Cum Laude with an Associate
of Science degree in Biochemistry. She hopes to earn a Ph.D. and
attend medical school to become a doctor.
